Billy Moore is a former Australian rugby league footballer celebrated for his passionate representation of Queensland and his significant contributions to the North Sydney Bears.
Raised in Wallangarra, Queensland, Billy’s early exposure to rugby league came through the Wallangarra Bulls and the Tenterfield Tigers, where he showcased his talent and determination.
Billy’s professional career commenced in 1989 when he joined the North Sydney Bears. Over the course of his career, he played 211 matches for the Bears, primarily in the lock and second-row positions. His playing style was characterized by his relentless work ethic, toughness, and leadership on the field.
In 1992, Billy made his debut for the Queensland State of Origin team. He became an iconic figure in Origin history, particularly remembered for his impassioned “Queenslander!” chant in the tunnel before the second half of Game 1 in 1995, rallying his team and fans alike. Throughout his career, Billy earned 17 State of Origin caps for Queensland and represented Australia in 3 Test matches, including participation in the victorious 1995 Rugby League World Cup team.
After retiring from professional rugby league, Billy transitioned into a career as a motivational speaker and media personality. He became a regular panellist on Fox Sports’ NRL 360 show, offering insights and commentary on the game.In 2000, Billy was honoured with the Australian Sports Medal for his contributions to rugby league. He was also named in the North Sydney Bears’ Team of the Century in 2006.
Beyond his media endeavours, Billy co-owns a restaurant on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, blending his passion for hospitality with his entrepreneurial spirit. In 2011, he served as an ambassador for a proposed second Brisbane NRL expansion team, reflecting his ongoing commitment to the growth and development of rugby league.
