Olympic Gold Medalist, Gender DEI Advocate

Ellia Green OAM is a proud Fijian, retired professional Rugby Sevens player who won Olympic gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Ellia also achieved a silver medal at 2018 Commonwealth Games, finalist in the Rugby Sevens World Cup in San Francisco. Ellia has played in the International HSBC World Rugby Sevens circuit for over a decade, after debuting in Texas, Houston in 2012. In 2021, Ellia became the highest ranking try scorer for Australia. Prior to rugby, Ellia was a track and field sprinter, specialising in the 100M and 200M and made his first international meet in Doha Qatar in the World Juniors for the 100M. 

Ellia retired from rugby in August 2021 and is in the final year of completing bachelor’s degree in international security at Macquarie University. Ellia is a national champion for change ambassador for the United Nations Australia, Adopt Change Ambassador and Raise Ambassador (mentoring programs for youth).

Since retiring from professional sport Ellia has moved into the corporate world in his role at Ernest and Young (EY) working in Security/Defence. In addition to this Ellia worked in the role of assistant editor for the Australian Institute of international affairs and had his first article published in April this year titled “The silence and shame of human trafficking in Fiji” which is one of Ellia’s proudest achievements to date. 

On a personal level, Ellia has found liberation in his gender identity and sense of self undergoing his gender transition after retiring from rugby at the end of 2021. This along with the greatest achievement yet, becoming a dad to his daughter Waitui born in February 2022. 

Whilst being known as an internationally successful athlete, Ellia Green speaker and inspirational force continues a strong commitment off the field as a leader and advocate in gender diversity, inclusion and equity and finds love and fulfilment in sharing his journey with others.
