Geoff Toovey

Premiership winning Captain

Geoff Toovey affectionately known as “Tooves” played 286 NRL games with the Manly Sea Eagles. He Captained Manly to the 1996 Premiership. Geoff was awarded the Clive Churchill Medal in the 1996 Grand Final for best on ground. He played 16 games for the NSW Blues in the State of Origin and 13 Tests for Australia. Geoff was the halfback in the 1995 Rugby League World Cup winning side. As Coach, Geoff guided his Manly side to the 2013 NRL Grand Final and coached the team between 2012 and 2015.

Despite giving away size and weight to almost every player on the football field, the champion halfback-turned-hooker rose to the position of Manly, NSW and Australian Test Captain in an inspirational career. Outside of winning a Grand Final, a Clive Churchill Medal and a World Cup, Geoff received the ultimate honour named as Captain of the Australian side in 1996 and was the Captain of the NSW Blues side that won the 1997 Series against Queensland.

Geoff retired at the end of 2001. Whilst he became an Accountant and a member of the board of the NRMA, his involvement in the NRL was far from finished. In 2004, he joined his beloved Manly Sea Eagles under Des Hasler and in 2011 was appointed Head Coach for the 2012 season. In his first season as coach the club came to within one game of the grand final. The following year, Geoff guided his team to the 2013 NRL Grand Final. In total, Geoff coached the Manly side in 105 games finishing up with them in 2015.
