Australian Football Hall of Fame ‘Legend’ Status, 4 x AFL Premierships
Jason Dunstall is one of Australian football’s most prolific and respected figures.
Over a 14-year career with the Hawthorn Football Club from 1985 to 1998, Jason established himself as a dominant full-forward, renowned for his precision, strength, and unselfish play. He played 269 games and kicked 1,254 goals, placing him third on the all-time VFL/AFL goalkicking list, behind only Tony Lockett and Gordon Coventry.
Recruited from Coorparoo in Queensland, Jason quickly became a cornerstone of Hawthorn’s golden era. He was instrumental in the club’s four premiership victories in 1986, 1988, 1989, and 1991. His individual accolades include three Coleman Medals (1988, 1989, 1992), four Peter Crimmins Medals as Hawthorn’s best and fairest (1988, 1989, 1992, 1993), and 12 seasons as the club’s leading goalkicker. Notably, he surpassed 100 goals in a season six times, a testament to his consistency and elite performance.
Jason’s playing style was characterised by his exceptional goal-scoring ability, strong marking skills, and physical presence on the field. Standing at 188 cm and weighing 100 kg, he had the ideal build for a full-forward. His strength and agility allowed him to outmaneuver defenders, while his precision kicking ensured he capitalised on scoring opportunities.
After retiring in 1998, Jason continued to contribute significantly to Hawthorn off the field. He served as the club’s interim CEO in 2004 and later as Football Director, playing a pivotal role in the appointment of coach Alastair Clarkson.This leadership helped lay the foundation for Hawthorn’s premiership successes in 2008 and the historic three-peat from 2013 to 2015.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the sport, Jason was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2002 and elevated to Legend status in 2024, becoming the 32nd player to receive this honour.
Beyond his administrative roles, Jason Dunstall speaker and legend has become a prominent football media personality. He has provided commentary for various radio stations in Melbourne and appears regularly on Fox Footy as the host of the show “Bounce.” His insights and engaging style have made him a respected voice in the football community.
