Jason Gillespie

Legend of the Game

Jason Gillespie nicknamed ‘Dizzy’ played 71 Tests and 97 One Day Internationals for Australia between 1996 to 2006. He claimed 259 Test wickets and 142 ODI wickets during his career.

Jason’s 259 Test wickets at an average of 26.13 made him Australia’s sixth highest wicket taker and giving him the 14th best bowling average for Australian bowlers who have taken more than a hundred wickets.

In 2004, Jason was named in both the World Test XI and the ODI XI by the ICC. Jason also proved his worth with the bat with a highest Test score of 201 not out. Despite not regularly making big scores, he was a difficult batsman to dismiss. A great moment was when Glen McGrath (61 runs) and Jason (54* runs) shared a last wicket stand of 114 against NZ in 2004 at the GABBA to the hilarity and acclaim of their teammates. It was the first time either of them had made a 50 in an international. In 2016, his 201 not out set a world record for the highest individual score by a night watchman! He shared a fourth wicket partnership of 320 runs with Mike Hussey.

Most recently, Jason has gone on to become a coach. He began in Zimbabwe in 2010 where he worked closely with the MidWest Rhinos as well as working on the Grass Roots to boost the performance of young players in the country. He was selected as the bowling coach of Kings XI Punjab in 2011 before moving to Yorkshire County Cricket Club to become the first-team coach. His time with the team involved a promotion to first division where they won the title in 2014 and 2015, his performance meant that he was also considered to become the Coach of England. After returning to Australia in 2016, Gillespie enjoyed a brief period with Adelaide Strikers before being named interim head coach for the Papua New Guinea national team in 2017 and taking up the position of head coach of Sussex County Cricket club in 2018.

In 2020, Jason was appointed the new coach of South Australia.
