Jeff Wilson MNZM

Dual International – All Blacks & Blackcaps

Jeff Wilson MNZM played 60 Tests for the All Blacks from 1993-2002 scoring an incredible 44 tries. He also played 72 Super Rugby games for the Highlanders and 56 games for Otago.

Jeff also played 6 ODI’s for New Zealand Cricket, four in 1993 and then after his rugby career he played a further two games, all against Australia.

Jeff was one of New Zealand’s most dynamic and multi-talented athletes, celebrated not only for his brilliance on the rugby field but also for his rare achievement of representing his country in two different sports—rugby union and cricket. Known as “Goldie” for his blond hair and golden touch, Jeff’s athleticism, flair, and competitive spirit made him a fan favourite and a standout performer during a golden era for the All Blacks.

Born in Invercargill, Jeff grew up in Southland and attended Kingswell High School before moving to Invercargill’s Cargill High. From a young age, he stood out in a variety of sports, including athletics, basketball, cricket, and rugby. He was an outstanding all-rounder, blessed with natural speed, agility, and game sense. At 19, he made his international cricket debut for New Zealand, playing four One Day Internationals as a teenage batting prodigy. But while cricket showed promise, it was rugby union where Jeff would ultimately leave his biggest mark.

Jeff made his debut for the All Blacks in 1993 at the age of just 20, in a Test match against Scotland in Edinburgh. It was a dazzling introduction—he scored two tries and quickly established himself as a world-class winger. His acceleration, elusive footwork, and eye for the tryline made him one of the most feared attackers in the game. Over the next decade, Jeff earned 60 Test caps for the All Blacks and scored 44 tries—at one point holding the record as New Zealand’s all-time leading try-scorer.

A key figure in New Zealand’s backline during the mid to late 1990s, Jeff was central to the All Blacks’ campaigns at the 1995 and 1999 Rugby World Cups. Though the 1995 final loss to South Africa was a heartbreaking moment in All Blacks history, Jeff’s form throughout the tournament reinforced his reputation as a player for the big stage. His ability to perform under pressure, create space out of nothing, and link brilliantly with teammates like Jonah Lomu and Christian Cullen made him a fixture in the side for years.

At Super Rugby level, Jeff was a star for the Highlanders. Based in Dunedin, the team became known for its expansive, fast-paced style, which perfectly suited Jeff’s natural instincts. He thrilled fans at Carisbrook with his line breaks, try-scoring exploits and reliable defence, playing a key role in the Highlanders’ rise as a competitive force in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Despite his extraordinary rugby success, Jeff’s career was not without setbacks. Injuries and team reshuffles occasionally interrupted his rhythm, and his 1999 World Cup campaign ended in disappointment after New Zealand’s semi-final loss to France. After briefly stepping away from rugby in the early 2000s, he made a comeback but eventually retired from international play in 2001. In 2003, he returned to professional cricket with Otago, reaffirming his rare ability to compete at the highest levels of two national sports.

Off the field, Jeff Wilson speaker, legend and commentator has continued to be a highly respected figure in New Zealand sport. He transitioned smoothly into broadcasting, where his insightful rugby analysis and affable style have made him a familiar face on television.
