Karla Grant is a distinguished Australian presenter, producer, journalist, and proud Western Arrernte woman who boasts an illustrious media career spanning over three decades. Throughout her journey, Karla has been a prominent figure in Indigenous news and current affairs, predominantly for NITV and SBS, earning widespread recognition and respect in the Australian media landscape.

Beginning her tenure with SBS in 1995, Karla undertook various roles including producer, reporter, director, and presenter for the network’s Indigenous news and current affairs program, ICAM. Her contributions to the program were instrumental in securing a prestigious Walkley Award. In 2003, Karla embarked on her most renowned endeavour as the esteemed host and Executive Producer of NITV’s acclaimed show, Living Black.

Karla’s career is studded with accolades, including the First Nations Media Award for Best Interview, which she has received three times for her remarkable conversations with notable figures such as former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, the esteemed Uncle Jack Charles, and Senator Patrick Dodson in 2018, 2019, and 2020 respectively.

Additionally, Karla was honoured with the John Newfong Award for Outstanding Indigenous Affairs Reporting in 2018 and 2020 for her contributions to The Point and Living Black, respectively. Notably, in 2020, her documentary on Aboriginal Lives Matter earned Karla another First Nations Media Award for Best News or Current Affairs Story.

In 2021, Karla and the Living Black team clinched their first Walkley Award for their exceptional coverage of Indigenous issues, alongside an Amnesty International Media Award for Indigenous Reporting. Furthermore, in 2023, Karla received another Kennedy Award for Outstanding Reporting on the Environment for Living Black’s investigative work into Western Australia’s heritage protection laws.

Karla’s versatility is evident as she has contributed across the SBS Network, presenting news and current affairs for SBS World News, guest-hosting Insight, and reporting for Dateline. She has also played pivotal roles at NITV, presenting NITV News, acting as a backup host for Nula, reporting segments for The Point, and hosting The Point in Review.

Since 2019, Karla has helmed Karla Grant Presents, and this year marks her 20th anniversary of producing and hosting Living Black, the longest-running Indigenous current affairs program on Australian television.
