Luke Ricketson
Sydney Roosters Premiership Legend, 300+ NRL games
Luke Ricketson had a distinguished career playing as a forward for the Sydney Roosters in the National Rugby League (NRL). He was a one-club man who exemplified loyalty, durability, and professionalism over a career that spanned more than a decade.
Luke made his first-grade debut for the Roosters in 1991. Initially playing in the centres, he eventually transitioned to the forward pack, where he made his greatest impact as a lock and second row forward. His style of play was built on consistency, athleticism, and intelligence. Luke wasn’t known for flashy plays or headline-grabbing performances but instead for his reliability, work ethic, and leadership. He became the backbone of the Roosters’ forward pack during a crucial period in the club’s resurgence.
Throughout his career, Luke played 301 games for the Sydney Roosters, a club record at the time of his retirement in 2005. He captained the side in his later years and was a key figure during one of the Roosters’ most successful periods in the modern era. He was part of the team that won the 2002 NRL Premiership under coach Ricky Stuart, a crowning achievement in a career defined by dedication and team-first mentality. In addition to the 2002 premiership, he also played in the 2000, 2003, and 2004 Grand Finals, demonstrating his consistency at the highest level of competition.
On the representative scene, Luke made his debut for New South Wales in the State of Origin series in 1999 and played a total of 10 games for the Blues through to 2004. He also represented Australia in international rugby league, making his test debut in 2003 and participating in the 2004 Tri-Nations series. He was also eligible to play for Ireland due to his ancestry and did so in the 2000 Rugby League World Cup, showcasing his versatility and international appeal.
Off the field, Luke has remained involved in the sport and the Roosters organisation through ambassadorial and media roles. Luke is a current Sydney Roosters Board Member and in 2021 launched Ricketson Insurance.
