Malcolm Blight AM

Australian Football Hall of Fame ‘Legend’

Malcolm Blight is an inaugural inductee of the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 1996 and was elevated to ‘Legend’ status in 2017.

Malcolm was one of the superstars of his era. Well known for taking spectacular marks on a regular basis and kicking bags of goals. He is fondly remembered by over 150,000 spectators, who claim to have been at Princes Park in 1976, for kicking an 80-metre screw punt through the centre of the goal posts to beat Carlton after the siren! It is not unusual to hear some state as fact that it travelled 100 metres!

Throughout his on-field career, Malcolm played 330 games and amassed 786 goals. He won two Premierships, a Brownlow Medal, a Coleman Medal plus many other Club related medals for best & fairest.

After his success on the park Malcolm continued his great run in the coaches’ box. He is remembered by many not just for his outstanding record but also for his occasional unorthodox coaching methods. Malcolm won two AFL Premierships as Coach of the Adelaide Crows (1997 & 1998). Malcolm was subsequently named as the Coach of Adelaide’s Team of the Decade.

These days, Malcolm has continued his football involvement through the media. He commentated for the Seven Network during his hiatus from coaching in 1995 and 1996 and also co-hosted Talking Footy with fellow commentator Bruce MacAvaney and journalist Mike Sheahan. He was one of the commentators at Waverley Park during the famous “Lights Out Incident” during a night match between Essendon and St Kilda in 1996. After finishing up as a coach, Blight commentated for Network Ten’s television coverage. He also wrote football-related articles for the Sunday Mail.
