Mark Ella AM

One of the True Greats

Mark Ella is one of the greatest rugby players of all time. He was awarded the Australian Sports Medal and the Centenary Medal in 2001 as a Member of the Order of Australia.

Mark was born in a La Perouse mission in Sydney’s south. Coming from a family of 12, Mark isn’t the only Australian representative. His brothers Gary and Glen were also Australian Wallabies, and Mark’s sister Marcia played for the Australian Netball team.

Mark and his brothers were educated at Matraville High School, where they learned to play rugby. Mark also played for Randwick and New South Wales domestically and played 25 tests between 1980-84.

In 1982, he was given the honour of Captaining the Wallabies (Australia) against the All Blacks (New Zealand). Mark achieved a “Grand Slam” by scoring a try in every test match of the 1984 Tour of the UK series, something that he had also accomplished on the 1977/78 Australian Schoolboys tour.

Mark was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1984, and was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1987. In 1997 he was inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame. He received a Centenary Medal and an Australian Sports Medal in 2001. In 2005 he was honoured as one of the inaugural five inductees into the Australian Rugby Union Hall of Fame.

Mark currently works at NITV, Australia’s free-to-air Indigenous television station as Executive Producer and Head of NITV Sports.
