NRL Legend – St George Illawarra Dragons 2010 Premiership

Matt Cooper played his entire National Rugby League (NRL) career for the St George Illawarra Dragons, making 244 appearances and scoring 125 tries, the most by any player in the club’s history. Matt was a key figure in the Dragons’ 2010 NRL Grand Final victory, contributing significantly to their success.

Matt’s rugby league journey began at a young age when he played for the Shellharbour Sharks. His talent was evident early on, leading to his signing with the Illawarra Steelers before the club’s merger with the St George Dragons in 1998. He made his NRL debut in 2000 and quickly established himself as a formidable centre known for his strong defensive skills and ability to break through opposition lines.

Throughout his career, Matt was a consistent performer for the Dragons, earning recognition at the representative level.He represented the New South Wales Blues on 13 occasions in State of Origin and played for the Australian Kangaroos in 7 internationals. His performances were marked by his hard-running style and commitment to his team’s success.

In 2013, after a distinguished 13-year career, Matt announced his retirement from the NRL. His departure marked the end of an era for the Dragons, as he had been a cornerstone of their backline for over a decade. Following his retirement, Matt has remained involved in the rugby league community, contributing to various initiatives and maintaining his connection with the sport.
