Born in Sydney, Michael’s rugby journey began at St Pius X College before progressing through the representative pathways with the Manly Marlins and New South Wales. His exceptional talent was quickly recognised, leading to his Super Rugby debut with the ACT Brumbies in 2010. Over three seasons with the Brumbies between 2010 and 2012, Michael quickly established himself as one of Australian rugby’s brightest young talents. In 2013, he returned home to join the NSW Waratahs, where he became one of the competition’s premier players and played a pivotal role in delivering the franchise’s historic Super Rugby title in 2014. Later in his career, he also spent two successful seasons with Japanese club Toyota Verblitz, further enhancing his international experience and leadership credentials while competing in one of the world’s leading professional rugby competitions.
Michael made his Wallabies debut in 2012 at just 20 years of age and immediately announced himself as an international star. His remarkable speed, ability to win turnovers, defensive intensity and tireless support play made him one of the first names selected for Australia. Despite his relatively young age, he displayed maturity beyond his years and was appointed Wallabies captain in 2014, becoming one of the youngest players ever to lead the national side.
Throughout an era of significant change and challenges for Australian rugby, Michael became the face of the Wallabies. He captained Australia in more than 65 Test matches and played well over 120 internationals, ranking among the nation’s most capped players. His performances earned numerous accolades, including multiple John Eales Medals as Australia’s Player of the Year and repeated recognition among the world’s leading loose forwards.
Michael represented Australia at two Rugby World Cups, playing a pivotal role in the Wallabies’ run to the 2015 Rugby World Cup Final and continuing to lead the national team with distinction in subsequent campaigns. Admired for his professionalism, resilience and humility, he consistently performed at the highest level regardless of the pressures surrounding the team, earning a reputation as one of world rugby’s premier flankers.
Away from the field, Michael has built an impressive portfolio of business and commercial interests. He is an active investor with a strong focus on innovation, technology and high-growth businesses, and is a partner with Athletic Ventures, a venture capital fund investing in companies at the intersection of sport, health, technology and human performance. His investment philosophy reflects the same discipline, preparation and long-term thinking that defined his rugby career, supporting ambitious founders and identifying businesses with the potential to create lasting impact.
Michael is also one of Australia’s most sought-after keynote speakers, sharing insights on leadership, resilience, teamwork, culture and sustained high performance with corporate audiences across Australia and internationally. Drawing on his experiences captaining the Wallabies through both success and adversity, he delivers practical lessons on leading under pressure, building resilient teams and creating high-performing cultures that resonate with executives, leaders and organisations navigating change.
In addition to his investment activities, Michael works with a select group of organisations as an ambassador, strategic adviser and commercial partner. He continues to expand his interests across business, leadership development and sport, mentoring emerging athletes while supporting innovation and performance excellence.
