Steve Johnson affectionally known as “Stevie J” won three AFL Premierships for the Geelong Cats in 2007, 2009 and 2011. He won the Norm Smith Medal in 2007 for best on ground in the AFL Grand Final.

Steve is a celebrated figure in Australian rules football, renowned for his extraordinary talent, flair, and significant contributions to the sport. Born in Wangaratta, Victoria, Steve’s football journey began with the Wangaratta Football Club before progressing to the Murray Bushrangers in the TAC Cup. His remarkable skills caught the attention of AFL scouts, leading to his selection by the Geelong Football Club with pick 24 in the 2001 AFL Draft.

Steve’s early years at Geelong were marked by inconsistency and off-field challenges. However, his fortunes changed dramatically in 2007 following a club-imposed suspension for off-field behavior. Returning with renewed focus, Steve delivered a stellar season, culminating in a standout performance in the Grand Final where he kicked four goals and earned the Norm Smith Medal as best on ground. 

Throughout his career, Steve was celebrated for his creativity, unpredictable play, and knack for scoring remarkable goals. He played a pivotal role in Geelong’s dominance during the late 2000s, contributing to three premiership victories in 2007, 2009, and 2011. His individual accolades include three All-Australian selections (2007, 2008, 2010) and two club leading goalkicker awards. 

After 253 games and 452 goals with Geelong, Steve joined the Greater Western Sydney Giants in 2016. Over two seasons, he added 40 games and 64 goals to his career tally, providing veteran leadership to the young club. He retired at the end of the 2017 season, concluding a remarkable career with 293 games and 516 goals.

Post-retirement, Steve transitioned into coaching, serving as an assistant coach with the Sydney Swans before returning to the Giants in a similar capacity. His deep understanding of the game and innovative approach have made him a valuable asset in developing the next generation of AFL talent.
