Steve Roach
Rugby League Icon – NRL Hall of Fame
Steve Roach, affectionately known as “Blocker,” is a legendary figure in Australian rugby league, celebrated for his toughness, skill, and vibrant personality both on and off the field. He rose to prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s as one of the most formidable prop forwards of his era.
Steve began his rugby league journey with Wests Illawarra before being recruited by the Balmain Tigers in 1982. Over the next decade, he became a cornerstone of the club, playing 185 first-grade games in a career defined by aggressive forward play and relentless effort. His presence in the Balmain pack, alongside teammates such as Wayne Pearce, Paul Sironen, and Benny Elias, helped the Tigers reach consecutive Grand Finals in 1988 and 1989. Although they fell short on both occasions, including a dramatic loss to Canberra in extra time in 1989, Steve’s performances cemented his status as one of the game’s elite front-rowers.
Beyond his club career, Steve was a standout in representative rugby league. He made his debut for New South Wales in the State of Origin series in 1984 and went on to play 17 games for the Blues. His efforts contributed to Origin series victories in 1985, 1986, and 1990. On the international stage, Steve earned 20 Test caps for Australia from 1985 to 1991. He was a key figure in two Kangaroo Tours, in 1986 and 1990, where he played Tests against Great Britain and France, and numerous minor tour matches. Despite suffering a dislocated elbow during the 1986 tour, Steve’s resilience and passion for the game saw him return to top-level competition.
Steve’s playing style was a blend of physicality and finesse. While known for his brutal charges and fearsome defense, he also possessed remarkable ball-handling ability, often creating second-phase play through clever offloads. His competitive nature, fiery temperament, and unmistakable presence on the field made him both respected and feared by opponents.
After retiring from professional rugby in 1992, Roach transitioned into a successful media career. He became a familiar voice in rugby league commentary, known for his honest opinions, deep understanding of the game, and humorous take on events. He worked with various media outlets, including Channel Nine, 2GB, and Fox Sports, becoming a beloved figure in the broadcasting world.
Steve’s contributions to the sport have been widely recognised. He was inducted into the NRL Hall of Fame in 2008 and the New South Wales Rugby League Hall of Fame in 2024, honouring both his playing achievements and his enduring influence on the game.
Today, Steve Roach is remembered not only as a powerhouse forward but as a character who brought passion and color to rugby league. His legacy continues to inspire young players, and his impact on the sport—through both playing and commentary—remains indelible.
