Tony Armstrong

First Nations TV Presenter | AFL Legend

Tony Armstrong is a proud Gamilaroi man hailing from rural NSW who has left an indelible mark on Australian media. His journey through the AFL with Adelaide, Collingwood and Sydney — including playing alongside his childhood hero Adam Goodes — was just the beginning of a career that has since reshaped Australia’s media landscape.

In 2019, Tony broke new ground as the first Indigenous person to provide live commercial radio commentary for Aussie Rules Football. His natural talent and charisma quickly led to roles on the Marngrook Footy Show and as a regular panellist on The Colour of Your Jumper.

Tony’s media footprint expanded rapidly in 2020 when he co-hosted the Indigenous comedy football chat show Yokayi Footy across NITV, SBS On Demand and AFL platforms, while also co-hosting ABC Melbourne’s breakfast radio program alongside Sammy J. Later that year, he joined the ABC as a sports presenter across ABC News, ABC Sport’s Grandstand AFL and the summer series of Offsiders. In 2021, the ABC announced Tony as the full-time sports presenter on News Breakfast, where he quickly became one of the network’s most popular and trusted faces.

Beyond news and sport, Tony has built an impressive slate of television credits. His recent hosting credits include the ABC special Always Was Tonight, the SBS three-part documentary series End Game which has been nominated for Best Documentary/Factual Program at the 2026 AACTA Awards, and the six-part ABC series Eat the Invaders. In 2025, Tony reached another major milestone when he took over hosting duties for the Eurovision Song Contest on SBS alongside Courtney Act, bringing his trademark warmth and humour to one of the world’s most iconic live television events.

In addition to these recent projects, Tony has hosted Tony Armstrong’s Extra-Ordinary Things, Monday’s Experts, Great Australian Stuff and A Dog’s World with Tony Armstrong for the ABC. He has made regular appearances on The Weekly with Charlie Pickering, The Yearly, The Project and Fox Footy, appeared in multiple Play School specials, and voices Mr Flip on ABC Kids’ Reef School. He also voiced the character of Max in Adam Elliott’s Oscar-nominated feature film Memoir of a Snail.

Tony’s work has been recognised with some of the industry’s highest honours. He won the Bert Newton Award for Most Popular Presenter at the 2023 Logie Awards, following his Graham Kennedy Award for Most Popular New Talent win in 2022. In 2024, he was named Icon of the Year at the Pedestrian Television Awards and received a Gold Logie nomination for his work across the ABC.

In addition to television, Tony was the host of The Pool Room, an award-winning podcast series produced by ARN. Over three successful seasons, the podcast won Best Sports Podcast at the 2023 Australian Podcast Awards and, in 2024, took home both Best Sports Podcast and Best Entertainment Podcast.

Tony is also a gifted writer, creator and highly sought-after MC, known for his warmth, humour and ease across events of all sizes — from intimate gatherings to major televised productions. His debut children’s book George the Wizard was released in late 2024 through Hachette Australia, followed by Maggie the Dragon in 2025. Alongside his on-screen and literary work, Tony is currently developing a slate of new television projects set to further expand his creative footprint.
