The Future of Culture & Technology

Dr Genevieve Bell AO FTSE FAHA is a distinguished professor who assumed the role of the 13th Vice-Chancellor at ANU in January 2024, making her the university’s first female Vice-Chancellor. Concurrently, she holds positions as Vice President and Senior Fellow at Intel Corporation.

With a doctoral degree in cultural anthropology from Stanford University, Dr Genevieve is renowned as an anthropologist, technologist, and futurist. Her expertise, honed over more than two decades in Silicon Valley, has been instrumental in guiding Intel’s product development and advancing social science and design research. Notably, her work focuses on the intersection of cultural practices and technological advancements, establishing her as a significant voice in global discussions on artificial intelligence and its impact on society.

Returning to Australia in 2017, Dr Genevieve founded the 3A Institute at ANU in collaboration with CSIRO’s Data61. The institute’s mission is to pioneer a new branch of engineering dedicated to safely, sustainably, and responsibly scaling AI-enabled cyber-physical systems. Subsequently, in 2021, she assumed the role of inaugural Director at the ANU School of Cybernetics, which builds upon the foundational work of the 3A Institute. The school aims to promote cybernetics as a vital tool for navigating significant societal transformations through capacity building, policy development, and the implementation of safe, sustainable, and responsible approaches to new systems.

Beyond her commitments at ANU and Intel, Dr Genevieve served as a Non-Executive Director on the Commonwealth Bank of Australia Board from January 2019 to October 2023. Presently, she is a member of the Prime Minister’s National Science and Technology Council and holds fellowships at the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE) and the Australian Academy of the Humanities (AAH). She also holds the Florence Violet McKenzie Chair and serves as an SRI International Engelbart Distinguished Fellow. Additionally, she is a member of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) AI Council and an Officer of the Order of Australia.
