Michael O’Loughlin

Michael O’Loughlin played his entire AFL professional career with the Sydney Swans from 1997 to 2009. In 303 AFL games for the Swans, Michael kicked a remarkable 521 career goals.

A member of the AFL’s Indigenous Team of the Century, Michael was an integral member in the Sydney Swans’ 2005 Premiership team. Michael twice achieved All-Australian selection and was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.

When Michael retired from football in 2009, he did so as one of the most beloved and decorated players in the history of the Sydney Swans Football Club.

Not only was Michael an extraordinary footballing talent, his off-field contribution to the club and community was unrivalled throughout his career. In addition to Sydney Swans initiatives such as the Healthy Choices schools programme, Michael has been an Ambassador for the Indigenous Literacy and Numeracy Programme, a director of the National Aboriginal Sporting Chance Academy and an Ambassador for the AFL Indigenous Academy. In 2009 the AFL Players’ Association awarded Michael the prestigious Madden Medal, which recognises on and off-field excellence and community spirit.

Since hanging up the boots, Michael has been Head Coach of the AIS-AFL Academy, Coached the Indigenous All-Stars team which toured Ireland in 2013, and has now come “home” to the Swans – as Head Coach of the QBE Sydney Swans Academy.

Michael is a co-founder and Board member of the Goodes O’Loughlin Foundation along with former Swans teammate and Australian of the Year Adam Goodes.
