Immortal

Wally Lewis “The King” is the greatest player of all time. In 1999, he was named the sixth member of “The Immortals”.

Wally represented Queensland in 31 State of Origin games from 1980 to 1991 and was Captain for 30 of them. He also represented Australia in 34 Tests between 1981 to 1991 and was the Australian Captain on 24 occasions. He is perhaps best known for his State of Origin performances, spearheading Queensland’s dominance in that competition throughout the 1980s winning a record 8 man of the match awards.

On the club scene Wally enjoyed Grand Final success with Wynnum–Manly in the Brisbane competition, before the arrival of the Brisbane Broncos into the NSWRL premiership in 1988. The push for a Brisbane team in the Sydney competition had grown on the back of Queensland’s Origin success built by Wally.

Following his retirement, a bronze statue of Wally was erected at Lang Park.

Wally has since been inducted into the Australian Rugby League Hall of Fame and in 1999 he became the sixth member of “The Immortals”. In 2000, he was awarded the Australian Sports Medal for his contribution to Australia’s international standing in the sport of rugby league. In 2008, named in the Australian Rugby League Team of the Century. In 2016, he became the 38thLegend of Australian Sport at the Sport Australia Hall of Fame awards.

These days, Wally is one of the Nine Network’s leading rugby league commentators and news presenters.
